Trey Anastasio Added to Bear Creek

While Phish won’t be touring this fall, the band’s guitarist has confirmed his first gig of the season as Trey Anastasio and his band has been added to the lineup for this year’s Bear Creek Music & Art Festival. Set to take place in gorgeous Spirit of the Suwanee Music Park in Live Oak, FL, Bear Creek is known for its intimate atmosphere, family feel and funk-heavy lineup.

Anastasio bolts to the top of Bear Creek’s bill with Medeski, Scofield, Martin & Wood, The Funky Meters, KDTU, Galactic, John Scofield & Piety Street, Soulive, Lettuce and MMW among the acts scheduled to perform in Live Oak between November 11 and 13. George Porter Jr & the Runnin’ Pardners, the Russell Batiste Band are among the other additions to the lineup announced today along with artists at large Freekbass, Nikki Glaspie, Jamie McLean, Will Bernard, Johnny Vidocovich, Roosevelt Collier, Scott Messersmith, Topaz, and Michelle Sarah. Head over to the festival’s website for the full lineup and ticketing information.

We spoke with Bear Creek organizer Paul Levine about booking TAB and he mentioned how much this addition meant to him. “Personally, I am head over heels excited to have The Trey Anastasio Band at Bear Creek. Trey is obviously considered by many to be the best and most emotionally expressive guitar player in the world. We are honored to welcome TAB to Bear Creek, Levine said.” Levine went on to explain, “I am a huge Phish and Trey fan. I saw Phish for the first time at Haverford College in a cafeteria in 1990, I believe, while I was at Lehigh University. Since 2000, I have probably seen Phish 40-50 times. I was at Coventry and at Madison Square Garden for New Year’s this year. I saw the famous ‘Meatstick’ in New York and it was probably the most joyful thing I’ve ever seen a band do.” READ ON for more…

Cover Wars March Madness: Sweet 16

Cover Wars March Madness rolls on. We’ve had our play-in round and our first full round of 32 covers and we’re left with our Sweet 16. We are in our third year of this tournament and we have just now done the obvious, we have generated an actual bracket so you can visualize how this is all going to go down. Have a look and be sure to vote in all eight matchups.

Matchup #1

Ramble On (Led Zeppelin)

Phish debuted this cover at Alpine Valley in the Summer of 1998. As most Phish fans know, there has been one other performance ever and it was the following week at Vernon Downs where the band paired Ramble On with their own Slave To The Traffic Light to close the first set. There are some killer Ramble On Teases in the Slave jam. Source: 8-1-1998

UPDATE: The text in all the descriptions for Cover Wars March Madness are taken from the original editions which at times – are out of date. As one of our readers pointed out in the previous round – Phish has since performed one more partial performance of Ramble On, and yes – it was pretty terrible.

VS.

Wilco – Thirteen (Big Star)

Wilco recorded this cover for the 2006 Big Star covers record Big Star Small World. Though never played live by Wilco, the song has made at least 11 appearances at Jeff Tweedy solo shows.

Stormy Monday: Trey Acoustic Mix

While Trey Anastasio still has five dates to go on this winter tour, it’s fair to say that this run of shows will remain memorable for years and years to come for its acoustic sets. I’ve never considered Trey a particularly good acoustic guitar player – certainly not compared to his contemporaries who regularly strap on a wooden ax: Warren, Bobby, Jake, Chuck, Al and the like. He mostly just strums a bit and plays mellow tunes – remember his sit-down request at Phish’s Festival 8?

Seeing him play acoustic has always been fun, but nothing too special, but this tour changed all that. He’s been out there every night playing a killer selection of songs – many of which have slight to bold changes in arrangement – singing his heart out, having the crowd sing its heart out too, and playing his guitar beautifully. It’s been magic.

With that in mind, here’s a mix of some highlights so far, a little something from every night. Especially noteworthy is the B-side here, the three-song run from early in the show at Albany. No audience has been so entirely right there with Trey and he responded in kind, just slaying the room with a glowing Number Line and the truly amazing risk of Limb By Limb on the fly – that was trust. And following that is the slick, nasty, reworked Cavern and stunning Harry Hood from Columbus. It’s a long one this week, so settle in and as always, enjoy!

TAB Albany: Photos and Live Phish Available

This past Saturday night, the Trey Anastasio Band delivered its best performance of the tour thus far at the Palace Theater in Albany, NY. While official recordings from last year’s shows were not made available through LivePhish.com outside of the TAB at the TAB release, we’re glad to see that Big Red has opted to make the Albany sets available for purchase and download.

HT Interview: Trey Anastasio, Part Two

Guitarist Trey Anastasio kicks off a 12-show tour with his solo band tonight at the State Theater in Portland, ME. To preview the Phish front man’s latest TAB tour, we’ve dedicated a post a day to Anastasio as part of the first-ever Hidden Track “Trey Week.”

“Trey Week” concludes today with the second part of our wide-ranging e-mail interview in which the guitarist talks to us about TAB keyboardist Ray Paczkowski, his songwriting process, black shirts and much more…

Hidden Track: Ray Paczkowski has been the one constant in this band since 2001. Can you tell us what aspect of Ray’s playing makes him perfect for this band and these songs?

Trey Anastasio: Oh man, where do I start? , Ray.. Ray takes my breath away. Ray’s spirit, Ray’s playing… Indescribable. His playing is… “unhinged?” He’s capable of letting go in a way that I’ve rarely heard a musician let go.

The thing is, if you believed in the muse, or the spirit, or the concept of an artist being a channel, then you would know that there is nothing in music to fear except fear itself. The more you let go the more “right” everything would sound, you know what I mean? Ray has that fearlessness. I’ve been in the studio with engineers and producers, and I’ll say “turn up Ray,” and we’ll turn him up and up and up and you can’t turn him up too much, because it’s a selfless playing so it never seems to intrude on the overall sound. It’s an amazing thing. I just love playing with him so much. I can’t wait to get to do it again. I usually spend the whole night just staring at Ray.

B List: 10 Things You Might Not Remember About Trey Anastasio’s First Solo Tour

In May of 1999, Trey Anastasio hit the road for his first solo tour. For this 12-show tour, Trey kicked things off with an acoustic set before welcoming drummer Russ Lawton and bassist Tony Markellis for an electric second set. The debut TAB tour contained plenty of standout moments, but there are a few highlights that generally get forgotten about in Trio Tour discussions.

This week’s B List continues “Trey Week” by detailing 10 Things You Might Not Remember About Anastasio’s First Solo Tour. As the Phish front man sets off to embark on a tour tomorrow with the same number of shows and same format as the 1999 TAB tour, let’s take a look back at that initial run…

10) Type THAT into The Internet

“Golden Banter” as they say. It was 1999 and none of us were nearly as familiar with The Internet as we are now. After reading that his band had covered Voodoo Child when they had not Trey accurately pointed out, “There’s all this information but half of it is wrong!”. Then, there was also Trey’s reneged promise that the first person to type a song title into The Internet for his new acoustic ditty would have naming rights. Turns out that both the Internet’s pick of Minestrone and Trey’s pick of Purple Hugh didn’t stick and Page ultimately named the song The Inlaw Josie Wales. In this audio montage we hear all of this banter plus Trey’s hilarious take on his song’s “duologies.”

UPDATE: The nice thing about online publishing is that we can do things like this. So after being reminded by my good friend Brett aka “This guy here in the front row is yelling” reminds me of another chapter in Instrumental Internet Namegate. So here is the audio from Asheville that didn’t make it into the above montage.
