Last Week’s Sauce: March 15th – 21st

This new weekly feature will contain two things we very much enjoy here at Hidden Track: 1) Bands that tour aggressively and have open taping policies and 2) The tapers that are there to capture the moment. Every Wednesday we will look back at the previous week to see who was on tour and what recordings have already been dithered, tracked and uploaded.

Cover Wars: Into The Mystic Edition

Way back in October, I had a great time compiling the And It Stoned Me Cover Wars and this week I find myself selecting another track off of Van Morrison’s timeless 1970 release, Moondance – Into The Mystic.

Apparently, there must’ve been some memo inside the “How-to-be-a-jamband” kit that was being distributed in the mid ’90s, because this week we’ve got representation from God Street Wine, Percy Hill, Strangefolk, Jiggle The Handle & Gov’t Mule. No – not all of those bands are included, but members of those outfits appear all over this week’s edition. Checking in on the Fearless edition from two weeks ago, the Marco Benevento Trio has emerged victorious with its instrumental rendition.

Best of Cover Wars: The Seeker Edition

[Originally Published: November 25, 2008]

The Seeker was the The Who’s first single after the release of their epic rock opera Tommy. In his own words, Pete Townshend said, “I wrote it when I was drunk in Florida. Quite loosely, The Seeker was just a thing about what I call Divine Desperation, or just Desperation. And what it does to people.”

Cover Wars: Fearless Edition

Fearless is one of the best, if not the best song written in Open G Tuning.

Waters: “What’s interesting about it, for me, is that it’s interesting musically: (hums riff). Funnily enough, that was a tuning that Syd showed me. It’s a really beautiful open G tuning, for anybody who wants to tune their guitar: G-G-D-G-B-B.”

This Gilmour/Waters composition is on Pink Floyd’s sixth studio album, a 1971 release titled Meddle. Looking back seven days, Bonerama has emerged victorious in last week’s Peaches en Regalia Cover Wars

Friday Mix Tape: Who’s On Tour

In this digital age of live shows you can buy after the show and spoiler-free downloads posted minutes after the show lets out, I decided my first try at a Friday Mix Tape will feature tracks from shows that happened in the past seven days. All these tracks come from either bt.etree.org or the Live Music Archive, and none of these tracks are more than a week old.

Leading off we have the Bill Kreutzmann Trio with an extended take on The Dead’s China Cat Sunflower. Next, we turn to Chicago’s Cornmeal, who welcomed both horns and a percussionist to the stage for a Fat Tuesday show with Aiko Aiko. Moving on, the Derek Trucks Band contribute a 17+ minute cover-of-a-cover as they deftly explore John Coltrane’s take on Rodgers/Hammerstein’s My Favorite Things.

Coventry To Hampton: Phish Edition

Welcome to the final edition of our series titled Coventry To Hampton filling you in on the four members of Phish and what they’ve been up to these past five years. Part one featuring bassist Mike Gordon debuted on Monday, Part two featuring keyboardist Page McConnell was posted on Tuesday, Part three featuring Trey Anastasio was posted Wednesday, Part four featuring drummer Jon Fishman was posted yesterday.

Sure, Phish hasn’t played a live concert since Coventry, but there has been a whole bunch of Phish material performed and archival releases over the past four and a half years. In fact, there have been five official CD releases, four DVD releases and even more online audio and video downloads.

The realization that a Phish reunion was imminent came when the band joined together publicly for the first time since Coventry. On May 7, 2008, the four members of Phish reunited onstage at the 7th annual Jammy Awards at the WaMu Theater at Madison Square Garden to accept a lifetime achievement award. The band didn’t perform together at the ceremony, although Trey sat-in with the Fab Faux and Page played as part of a jazz supergroup put together by the event’s organizers. Phish also won the Download of the Year award for their release of The Headphones Jam.

Believe it or not, today is actually Jon Fishman’s 44th birthday. Not only is it his birthday, but he’s also up to something good. Tonight will be the first of two shows that Fish plays with the Jazz Mandolin Project. JMP rolls into the brand new Port City Music Hall in Portland, Maine tonight before taking the act to Burlington’s Club Metronome tomorrow. I’m making the trek from Boston tonight, I’m a big JMP fan and I’m excited to watch Fish play in a bar atmosphere before once again destroying arenas in as soon as two weeks.

HA Fish.

To nobody’s surprise, Trey has kept the most busy of the four members of Phish. The first major thing Trey did (after supposedly taking a Caribbean vacation directly after Coventry) was record his solo album Shine with producer Brendan O’Brien. Trey & O’Brien supplied the majority of the instrumentation and vocals with only one other real hired gun, and that was drumming monster Kenny Aronoff.

While Page didn’t stay as active as Mike, there’s still a lot to look back on since Coventry. Most notably, Page recorded his first solo album, a self-titled effort released in 2007. While Page had previously recorded two albums with Vida Blue, this was officially dubbed his first solo album. Page debuted a lot of material from the album at moe.down in 2006 with a band that included Jon Fishman on drums and a number of other musicians who appeared on the disc and subsequently toured with Page in 2007.
