Phish MSG Run 2010: From A to Z

Today we continue a tradition started last summer, where we examine a Phish run from A to Z. This time around the shows in question took place at Madison Square Garden last Thursday, Friday and Saturday as part of the band’s New Year’s celebration.

A is for Arena Rock – Phish harnessed the energy of the “World’s Greatest Arena” throughout all seven sets at MSG by focusing on the arena rock originals and covers in their repertoire. There were few ballads and lots of high impact moments from the Cities opener on the 30th through the Frankenstein encore on the 1st.

B is for Bust Outs – Dusting off gems from the Phish catalog which haven’t been performed in a while is a New Year’s Run tradition and this year’s run was no exception. Mike Gordon’s Round Room returned for the first time in 140 shows, the quartet’s cover of Beauty of My Dreams came back after 133 shows, and Manteca re-entered the fold after a 301 show hiatus.

C is for Caps – If you weren’t familiar with the ridiculous MSG policy of venue staff keeping the caps from water bottles before the run, you probably found out the hard way. A rock show isn’t exactly the best environment for a cap-less water bottle and many fans spilled plenty of water over the course of the three-day run, though most were wise enough to bring their own Dasani caps by Night Two.

It’s been quite a year for Furthur in every aspect including the size of the venues the group has been playing. Just four months ago, this post-Grateful Dead act offered two performances at the 2,100-capacity Best Buy Theater in New York City. This past weekend, Bob Weir and Phil Lesh brought their latest project to the 20,000 seats at Madison Square Garden for two nights. Both shows were different in everything from the flow of the setlists, to the crowd and band’s energy. It has been said that when the Garden is full of enthusiasm, magic does happen and that was indeed the case for Furthur.

Night one consisted of a monstrous first set that included a Help On The Way, Slipknot! and Shakedown Street combination that shook the entire arena with merciless energy between the crowd and the music. The rest of the set continued the Grateful Dead repertoire’s standard of crisp jams and stellar vocals, though there was a minor flub in El Paso. However, the Terrapin Station Suite closer was the highlight of the set as the 23-minute sequence brought silence and focus from the attentive crowd.

The second set of Saturday’s concert provided a more psychedelic vibe to the atmosphere mainly controlled by bassist Phil Lesh. He seemed to stop and start the songs, leading the way to the next jam or pushing the improvisation to the next level. This was clear on songs like Saint Stephen and from the way Millennium Jam segued into The Eleven, consisting of an increase in the tempo to bring up the intensity of the jams.

For the uninitiated, simply seeing one’s favorite bands or musicians in the live setting might be enough, but around these parts – where our average reader sees upwards of 50 shows per year – we’re pretty picky about our venues. Our staff and our readers like to see our favorite acts, but we like to see them in an ideal setting, with the perfect acoustics, unobstructed views and ample room – all while washing down some frosty craft brews. Over the next year we aim to detail the best venues in San Francisco, Denver, Chicago and New York City. We’ve started at home here in NYC.

In order to tackle this highly subjective topic, we asked our NYC-area staff members and a few local residents who see upwards of 100 shows a year to rank every venue we could think up – over 60 in total – from 1 to 20. Once we got the scores in from everybody, we utilized a highly complex algorithm called “averaging,” whereby we churned out our aggregated list of Hidden Track’s Best New York City Music Venues, fifteen to be exact.

1) Brooklyn Bowl – 61 Wythe Avenue, Williamsburg, NY 11211

History – Make no mistake, while it seems pretty New Yorky of us to pick the new kid on the block as the top venue, it’s not the novelty of newness that makes Brooklyn Bowl our favorite. True, the venue did just open July 7th, 2009, but the “for us, by us” nature of the venue – which comes from the same bloodlines as former NYC jam mecca, the Wetlands Preserve – assures that this place will hold court for many of the great NYC concerts for years to come.
