Interview: Mike Gordon’s Balancing Act

For Mike Gordon, having just finished an exhaustive two month swing of projects that included a 13-date Phish tour, the donning of another musical costume for Halloween as Little Feat’s Waiting for Columbus, the release of the new Mike Gordon Band album, Moss, and a 17-date tour behind it (that at one point included ten shows in just 11 days), it comes as no surprise that the opening track on his latest album is titled Can’t Stand Still.

Gordon has always been known for his tireless output — be it his bass playing with Phish, his collaborations, his solo career, writing, filmmaking or any number of other outlets — but at this point, the creative synapses are firing on overdrive.

Unlike many musicians who take the approach of churning out a record and touring behind it before taking an extended break, Mike takes a more calculated path. He aims to strike natural balances between his work with the two main bands (Phish and MGB), his professional time and his down time, his bass playing and other instrumental endeavors, and even his music and other creative outlets. It’s all a balancing act. And in the words of Albert Einstein, “Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance, you must keep moving.”

On Being a Bandleader

Given that Mike Gordon’s solo career exists in its relative infancy, as does his role as a bandleader, this era brings about many exciting changes and challenges. For example, he’s had to learn how to put together setlists; increase his sensitivity to people’s reactions to songs; internalize what’s going on in the room; and “let the music become what it wants to become.”

“It’s about discovering what is already there, and figuring out certain balances,” Mike explains. “For example, I really like playing music that people can dance to. So, if the people are dancing, do we try to keep them dancing? Or do we give them something more contemplative, or a slow song, to change moods? And if people seem to be sweaty and revved up and want to dance, is it OK to be counter-intuitive and say, ‘Maybe it’s time to change it up and explore something that’s more soul and less about body?’ You only learn to make these decisions by trial and error.”

A Memory of Music: November 2010

Kicking off this month’s edition of our look at the month in photographs are a couple shots from Halloween. The first one is an amusing photo of Bill Nershi of the String Cheese Incident, face to face with his pint size replica at the Hampton Coliseum on Hulaween. Apparently an enterprising photographer snuck the little guy up on stage, giving everyone a good laugh. You can check out tapes from the evening on the archive and livecheese.com

A review of the last few weeks wouldn’t be complete without a nod to Phish’s triumphant three night celebration in Atlantic City. Whether it was the Zeppelin and Little Feat covers, the outrageous costumes by the fans, the late night shows or all night parties at the Tropicana, a great time was had by all. Perhaps too good a time in one case.

Cover Wars: Skin It Back Edition

[Originally Published: June 24, 2009]

Following up on last week’s Willin’ Cover Wars, which the Black Crowes won by a small margin over Uncle Tupelo, we’re re-running an old Cover Wars on another Little Feat classic – Skin It Back…

Skin It Back is a track off the 1974 Little Feat album Feats Don’t Fail Me Now. It also has the distinction of being the first Little Feat song where the songwriting credits are solely that of guitarist Paul Barrère.

This is the second Little Feat song selected for CW. Longtime readers might remember that Mule was the winner of the Spanish Moon Cover Wars. [Ed. note – We’ve tackled Willin’ since this was originally posted]

Let’s get down to business and look at this week competitors…

The Bridge: Leading off this week is the only band that also appeared in the Spanish Moon Cover Wars and there is some excellent guitar work in this one. Source: 8-17-2005

Phish Fall Tour 2010 Survey Results

During a relatively brief tour of just 15 shows, Phish packed many highlights into the run that concluded in Atlantic City on Halloween. Phish kicked off the tour with a festival show in Texas, three consecutive nights in Colorado, two in the South, six at old school locations in the Northeast and a triumphant three night run in Atlantic City. The buzz throughout the last week or so of the tour was palpable with several shows destined to go down in the history books and be re-visited many times for years to come.

So what did everyone think?

[CLICK ON IMAGES FOR FULL-SIZE VIEW]

In the most lopsided of question of not only this survey, but all the prior ones as well, the resounding majority certainly felt that this was THE tour since the reunion. As Phish nears the 100 show mark since Hampton, it’s hard to argue that several of these fifteen were not among the best.

Overall Grade for Fall Tour

Solid again, with a much larger percentage of fans scoring a B+ or higher than previous tours.  Only 10% scored a B or lower. For three of you, we’ll catch you at the next WSP show.

Cover Wars: Ramble On Edition

[Originally Published: 9/14/2010] It’s been a while since I selected a Led Zeppelin song for Cover Wars, over a year actually. Though always a popular song on the radio, Ramble On was not played in full live by Led Zeppelin until 2007, 38 years after the release of Led Zeppelin II.

Postcards From Page Side: No Small Pheat

In this installment, Brian Bavosa dons his thinking cap for an inside look into Phish’s 2010 musical costume: Little Feat’s Waiting for Columbus…

This past weekend, Phish successfully concluded their 2010 Fall Tour with a three-night stand in Atlantic City, NJ.  Pulling out both “tricks” and “treats” for all, things culminated with a nearly 6-hour (!!!) performance on Halloween night at the historic Boardwalk Hall, complete with a second set rendition of Little Feat’s classic 1978, Double-Live album, Waiting for Columbus.

However, before the musical costume itself was performed – with the help of percussionist Giovanni Hidalgo and members of the Antibalas and Dap-Kings horn sections, Phish had a few scores to settle on the 29th and 30th, with some rockers, tongue-in-cheek humor and a a complete throwdown that saw them seriously get the Led out. Now, while I could easily turn this installment of the column into a three-show mega-review, as many may have seen me do in the past on my Phish tour beat, I will instead let the music do the talking for this past weekend and focus on how and why Phish arrived at the choice of Little Feat, and why it makes more sense than you think.

Now, to fully understand what Halloween means to Phish, and the elaborate thoughtfulness that starts months in advance, one must also consider at the very core, each and every choice in the musical costume tradition has essentially represented something about the band themselves, as individuals and a collective whole. Oh yeah, there’s the wild speculation, theories, sneaking around, misdirection and pranks, but you must also consider more than just the obvious factors and ingredients, as it all boils down to what is “in the fabric,” as drummer Jon Fishman says about this year’s selection.  In short, it was there all along, even if it is not glaringly apparent, as I feel Columbus might seem to most fans on the surface.
