Last Week’s Sauce: May 31st – June 6th

I had two options for this week’s piece. I could do what I normally do – create as diverse a list of artists as possible or I could just say fuck it and make this one all about Warren Haynes. I have gone with the latter. What we have here is audio from four different sets at this past weekend’s Mountain Jam all of which feature Haynes on every track. Next week we will return to our regularly scheduled programming, this week – it’s all about Warren.

Artist & Title: Derek Trucks & Susan Tedeschi Band – Coming Home
Date & Venue: 2010-06-05 Mountain Jam – Hunter, NY

This band has two sets of brothers: Derek & Duane Trucks and Oteil and Kofi Burbridge. Add Nigel Hall and Susan Tedeschi and it’s a pretty ridiculous lineup. Warren joined the band for the Delaney & Bonnie classic Coming Home. The Derek Trucks & Susan Tedeschi band next play July 2nd at the Cape Cod Melody Tent.

Cover Wars: Cortez The Killer Edition

This three-chord ditty, loosely based on Hernán Cortés, is originally off the 1970 Neil Young & Crazy Horse album Zuma. The simplicity and shear length of the tune makes it a prime candidate for cover renditions, and more of then than not… guest appearances. Often times those sit-ins include Neil Young himself as Neil has played Cortez with two of this week’s contestants.

Cover Wars

Fun fact: the original take had an extra verse at the end that was lost due to a problem in the studio. When Neil was informed of the glitch he simply responded, “I never liked that verse anyway.” Checking in on last week, moe. and Umphrey’s McGee are still battling it out in the Can’t You Hear Me Knocking Cover Wars, so head on over there and help settle the score.

This is the first of two recordings from last week captured during Highline Ballroom’s “piano series”. This is a great take on the, oh yeah, Neil Sedaka song. Extra props to taper Scott Bernstein (note: different than our editor Scott Bernstein, they get that lot) for taking the time to even-out the levels of the applause – a problem you get on many jazz recordings when songs end. The Bad Plus next play at the Rimouski International Festi Jazz. In a bit of Last Week’s Sauce coincidence (see below), their next gig after that will be with the Marco Benevento Trio in Boulder, CO.

When I started writing this weekly feature, I had the goal of showcasing new bands each week that had not previously appeared on Last Week’s Sauce. Well that’s officially over. There were just too many HT favorites out on the road last week for me to continue that trend…

Artist & Title: The Disco Biscuits – Uber Glue > Sabre Dance
Date & Venue: 2009-05-30 – Red Rocks, Morrison CO

The Disco Biscuits crossed a venue off their “to play” list this past weekend when they packed over 6000 fans into Red Rocks for an event they dubbed Bisco Inferno. This song combination features one of tDB’s newer instrumental compositions paired with an Aram Khachaturian’s composition from 1942 (an instrumental that had not been played by tDB in 5+ years). Sabre Dance has been used in many television shows, movies, etc…but the image it always conjures up in my mind is that of the 1985 flick Pee Wee’s Big Adventure. tDB play tonight in Providence.

A Phishy Night For The Allman Brothers Band

The Allman Brothers Band took things to the next level tonight both by themselves and with special guests keyboardist Page McConnell and axemen Buddy Guy and Trey Anastasio at the third show of their 40th Anniversary run at the Beacon Theatre in New York City. ABB guitarists Derek Trucks and Warren Haynes both were up to the task of dueling with their extremely talented guests and the crowd ate up every moment of it.

I’ve been following the run on Moogis so far and tonight was the first show of the run I caught in person. Boy, did I pick the right night to show up at the Beacon. It was clear the Trey and Page rumors I’ve been hearing for weeks were about to come true when I entered the newly renovated theater to see Anastasio’s wooden cabinet set up next to bassist Oteil Burbridge’s rig. As amazing as the Phish member’s sit-ins were, this show would still be my favorite ABB show I’ve seen without a sniff of our boys.

This third show started the same way the first show of the run started off on Monday; Derek and Warren nailed Duane Allman’s beautiful instrumental – Little Martha. The rest of the band shuffled out afterwards and ran through a number of their more bluesy numbers before welcoming Chicago blues legend Buddy Guy to the stage for a nasty cover of Elmore James’ The Sky Is Crying. Trucks was beaming as he dueled with Guy – one of his influences – through a number of call and response segments.
