HT Giveaway: Phan Food – The Book

There’s no feeling quite like walking out of a Phish show and finding a tasty dish in the parking lot that immediately kills the hunger pangs you’ve been fighting throughout the second set. Over the years, “lot food” has diversified from the staples of grilled cheese and veggie burritos to more intricate dishes such as gumbo, sushi and oatmeal chocolate chip cookies.

A new book called Phan Food compiles some of the best recipes for a variety of both “classic” recipes and new twists on old favorites from Phish fans around the country. Many are Phish-themed including Ain’t No Time to Stash The Chicken and Sausage Gumbo, Posternut Bagels and, of course, the ultimate garlic grilled cheese sandwich. This 200-page book comes out next month and is available for $19.95 through the publisher’s website. With the holiday shopping season about to kick off, Phan Food should make the perfect gift for the foodie phan in your life.

  1. veggie burrito at cincinatti 99 phish, all ingredients perfectly combined to make the perfect burrito. The carrot strips would not be something I thought would work in a burrioto but they added the perfect crunch. I think about that burrito often.

  2. Bought a teriyaki chicken stick from a dude at the KC show in 2003. Not quite sure it was chicken but was the best post-concert food I’ve ever eaten. …of course cardboard would have probably tasted like filet mingon to me at that moment in time.

  3. Grilled cheese, extra cheese, extra butter, garlic and oregano. Enough said. Close second were the ice cream waffles at Bonnaroo ’09. Glorious.

  4. In the fall of 99 in either Austin or Houston, I had the mother of all lot burritos. I’ve tried to recreate it several times since. Shredded chicken, butternut squash (perfectly in season at the time), cous cous, sauteed onions and peppers, some turmeric and curry powder. Whole wheat wrap. It was glorious. And, relative to most of what you’d find in the lot, it was super healthy without being vegetarian. Perfect combo for this guy.

  5. This summer, I got some Wellfleat Oysters on lot @ Great Woods. They were exquisite and classy! BBQ pulled pork on a big bulkie roll has always been a good find as well. mmm lotfood.

  6. Veggie burritos up at lemonwheel – I remember them being perfectly cooked, but I also remember being pretty perfectly cooked myself. I think that’s the point, though.

  12. Pork Chop Quesadillas in the lot in Miami 03. A little risky eating pork in the lot, but I said screw it and dove right in. Totally worth it, only bad result was a bit of fear of an impending stomach ache that never came.

  13. Waterloo ’95, it was hotter than heck–there was a guy selling Oranges and Water, and it was the perfect soccer-league treat for the hot weather.

  14. Greatest Grilled Cheese of my life was the “SLAP YO’ MAMMA” Grilled cheese @ noblesville 2010 after the second night show. I went back for multiple slaps that night…
