The Dresden Dolls: The Sugar Club, Dublin, Ireland 2/16/09

The Sugar Club may be one of the only place I enjoy going to in Dublin for live music.  It looks like a cinema-theatre, a place where everyone can see what is happening on the stage while being seated.  Amanda confirms later on her appreciation of the venue “This looks like fucking civilized”. The gig was sold out, which was no surprise because this is the front woman of the internationally known punk cabaret band “The Dresden Dolls”.

Honey Honey: First Rodeo

Don’t be fooled by honeyhoney’s moniker. The debut album from this duo, composed of Suzanne Santo and Ben Jaffe, is anything but saccharine and repetitive. It begins with Santo’s beautiful voice singing slow a cappella, usually an indication of a soulful ballad, before the band jumps in and turns the song (“Black Birds”) into a mid-tempo jazzy tune. It is the first of many pleasant surprises.

Part one featuring Mike Gordon debuted on Monday, and Part two featuring Page McConnell was posted yesterday. Jon Fishman’s piece will be up on Thursday, and Friday will feature a general roundup of all things Phish related.

The first major thing Trey did (after supposedly taking a Caribbean vacation directly after Coventry) was record his solo album Shine with producer Brendan O’Brien. Trey & O’Brien supplied the majority of the instrumentation and vocals with only one other real hired gun, and that was drumming monster Kenny Aronoff.

Review: Old Crow Medicine Show & The Felice Brothers @ Minglewood Hall

I’ve lived in Nashville, Tennessee for going on nine years at this point and since my residency here I’ve only traveled to Memphis one other time for a show. You see, the stretch of I-40 between Nashville and Memphis is called Music Highway — but to me it’s just flat out BOOOOORING.

[We’re All In This Thing Together]

This past Sunday was my second trip to Memphis to witness Old Crow Medicine Show and The Felice Brothers. After an (actual) enjoyable three-hour road trip and a pork-pulled sandwich from Tops the mood was set for what was witnessed at the completely new-state-of-the-art venue venue in Memphis — Minglewood Hall.

I’ve had the opportunity to see the Felice Brothers a couple of times this past year, and to be perfectly honest – their 45 minute set was the sole reason I traveled to Memphis. But the music lover I am, I decided to stick it out just to see what Old Crow had to offer. READ ON for more…
