Two of the five bands featured in today’s edition of Last Week’s Sauce offer acoustic performances from acts that normally rely heavily on electric guitars. Furthur contributes a track that has been 40 years in the making, we’ve got a very jazzy Beatles cover and close it out with a fantastic live recording of Pavement.

The Black Crowes – My Morning Song, Miracle To Me

The Black Crowes played an acoustic first set in Asheville this past Sunday and it is incredible. The two songs embedded below close the set. If you are a fan of this band I recommend downloading the entire acoustic set and adding it to your collection. The Crowes play tomorrow at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre in Houston, TX.

Last Week’s Sauce: August 23rd – 29th

Sometimes less is more. Effort that is. This week, you’re only getting tracks from three different bands, but I’m giving you fat sections of music from all three entries. Those of you who download the weekly podcast (and yelled at me last week for not including a download link) will be settling in for an hour’s worth of music from a Jazz Duo that somehow captured the hearts of jamband fans years ago, a trancefusion band in the midst of an impressive summer tour playing large stages and the brownest band on the scene.

Benevento Russo Duo – Blues For Allah, Best Reason To Buy The Sun

Joe Russo stated in an interview with JamBase in February of last year that, “I don’t care who comes to see our band; if you like our music, that’s great. But the first time someone yelled a Phish song at us when we were playing as The Duo, I got really fucking pissed. I was like, ‘That’s it, all we are now is this [band] that has to do with Phish.” This problem I’m sure has continued to grow as since that interview was published, he is now also touring with Phil Lesh and Bob Weir. It seems as though he may have gotten over it though, as The Duo last week performed the long GD composition Blues For Allah.

No future tourdates for the Benevento Russo Duo are currently on the books, but Marco Benevento is playing with Garage A Trois alongside Skerik, Mike Dillon and Stanton Moore; they play tomorrow at Doug Fir in Portland, OR. Joe Russo resumes his drumming duties with Furthur on September 16th in Eugene, OR.

Last Week’s Sauce: August 2nd – 8th

The nature of this weekly feature is that it highlights the quick turnaround of recordings made of live concerts. As the years have gone on, it has become easier to turn around these tapes faster and faster. And with our point-and-shoot cameras getting better every year, it doesn’t take a whole lot of effort to shoot some good video and upload it to YouTube. What is really fucking impressive about this week’s selections is that there are two different pro-shot videos officially released to accompany our audio. And one of them took place two days ago!

In this era of frequently selling live concerts over the Internet, the freely available SBD patch is becoming somewhat of a rarity. So I was excited to see this show up with the SBD source on the Live Music Archive as I did my weekly search for audio from the previous week. It’s been a busy summer for Tom Hamilton & American Babies playing shows with Big Light, Tea Leaf Green, and Umphrey’s McGee. This track, was released on the Weight of the World – EP in April of this year. American Babies next play the Liberate Music & Arts Festival in Sheldon, VT on Friday August 20th.

I had a horrible nightmare, I dreamed that we went…back in time. It was terrible. Well…We’re safe and sound now, back in good old 2010. We’ve got a nice collection this week, opening up with long instrumental exploration, members of The Grateful Dead, a jamband’s first show in over a year and some topical humor dedication from our friends from down south.

Artist & Title: Geoff Scott’s Public House – Unknown

I often write in this feature about one of Boston’s best kept secrets – Club D’Elf. Another one is Geoff Scott, guitarist formerly of Miracle Orchestra, that heads up Tuesday Night gigs at Atwood’s Tavern in Cambridge, MA. Geoff pulls from a similar pool of musicians that show up at Club D’Elf, and this 20-minute segment of music – which we are all having trouble figuring out song titles for – illustrates what this ensemble is all about. This past Tuesday’s performance featured Mike Rivard of Club D’Elf (Bass, Sintir, Kalimba), Johnny Trama (Guitar), Timo Shanko (Saxophone) and Brian Sayers (Drums). It’s not the most organized pickup jam, so I can’t even point you to a website that tells you when the next gig is.

This band has been covering White Rabbit for a while now, I keep seeing it on setlists but I hadn’t yet given it a listen until now. It’s everything you think it will be including some tastefully used vocal effects. Preceeding the Jefferson Airplane classic is one of Grace’s tunes from her first studio album Nothing But The Water. Grace Potter & The Nocturnals play tonight at Minglewood Hall in Memphis, TN.

Last Week’s Sauce: June 7th – 13th

It’s been six months since I was able to browse through Phish tapes for Last Week’s Sauce. Even with the LivePhish SBD’s sounding better than ever thanks to a new engineer working on the recording, we still enjoy a good AUD tape. Brings me back to a time when SBD’s were rare, even non-existent, for entire tours at a time. Fans were thankful to grab a quality recording and it sure seems like this led to us being a lot less critical of everything related to the shows. But Phish is just one of five bands featured this week, we’ve got some tapes from Bonnaroo and some other goodies for you as well.

Artist & Title: Michael Franti & Spearhead – Yell Fire, Hey Hey Hey

This is a tape from Tennessee but surprisingly not from Bonnaroo. I guess Superfly allowed Franti to play a gig in Memphis in addition to Bonnaroo, who knew? I don’t have an official How You Feeling/I Wanna See You Jumping count, but I can tell you there are at least three just IN BETWEEN the two songs. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve got a lot of love for Franti, I watched his webcast from Mountain Jam two weekends ago and was reminded just what command he has over a festival audience. Michael Franti & Spearhead play two shows on June 20th at Yoga Tree Casino in San Francisco.

Not to be confused with the David Grisman Quintet, this lineup featured: David Grisman (mandolin & vocals), Keith Little (banjo, guitar & vocals), Jim Nunally (guitar & vocals), Chad Manning (fiddle), and Samson Grisman (bass). In addition to that, the ensemble welcomed three different McCoury’s and Darol Anger during their lively set. The three tunes selected for the audio all feature Del McCoury, for whom the festival is named. The David Grisman Quintet next plays June 18th at Napa Opera House in Napa, CA.

It’s mostly a Rock & Roll recap here at Last Week’s Sauce. Notably, three of the bands (Blues Traveler, Pearl Jam, and Ween) all had their major studio debuts within one year of each other in 1990-1991. In the first edition of Last Week’s Sauce of the month we led off with a couple of tracks from 30db, which would normally mean I would ignore any new tapes that popped up. But a cover of Wilco’s Handshake Drugs is the type of thing we make exceptions for. Brendan Bayliss takes lead vocals on this one just a few months after Umphrey’s McGee debuted their cover of Wilco’s I Am Trying To Break Your Heart on Valentine’s Day. For the time being the full-band 30db gigs have past, but there is still one more chance to see Brendan Bayliss & Jeff Austin play the tunes from One Man Show: Thursday night at Summer Camp at 8pm at the Campfire stage.

As I always say, I’m at the mercy of what tapes are available when I put this piece together, and I had a great selection to choose from this time around especially when tapes popped up of rarely recorded acts like Iron & Wine & Local Natives. Well it only took about four years, but Brendan Bayliss & Jeff Austin have finally released their studio album. The selected audio features a Modest Mouse cover and one of Brendan’s contributions to the album. I cut out some banter in between the tracks, there was some nonsense in there about maple syrup, download the show if you want to hear it. 30db next plays May 19th at the Fox Theatre in Boulder.

We must be approaching festival season because the next gigs for three of the five bands in this week’s piece are at festivals. We’ve got a healthy dose of Grateful Dead this week with segments from both Burlington’s Dead Sessions and Zen Tricksters. We’ve also got a tune from RAQ’s return as well as Jim James lending some lead vocals to the Preservation Hall Jazz Band and a new My Morning Jacket tune that does not feature James on lead vocals.
