It’s been six months since I was able to browse through Phish tapes for Last Week’s Sauce. Even with the LivePhish SBD’s sounding better than ever thanks to a new engineer working on the recording, we still enjoy a good AUD tape. Brings me back to a time when SBD’s were rare, even non-existent, for entire tours at a time. Fans were thankful to grab a quality recording and it sure seems like this led to us being a lot less critical of everything related to the shows. But Phish is just one of five bands featured this week, we’ve got some tapes from Bonnaroo and some other goodies for you as well.

This is a tape from Tennessee but surprisingly not from Bonnaroo. I guess Superfly allowed Franti to play a gig in Memphis in addition to Bonnaroo, who knew? I don’t have an official How You Feeling/I Wanna See You Jumping count, but I can tell you there are at least three just IN BETWEEN the two songs. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve got a lot of love for Franti, I watched his webcast from Mountain Jam two weekends ago and was reminded just what command he has over a festival audience. Michael Franti & Spearhead play two shows on June 20th at Yoga Tree Casino in San Francisco.

A few weeks back I gave you my ultimate list for having the best campsite around, this list gets a little more personal. While you might be able to rely on your better prepared friends to bring the tarps and grills, for certain items you are on your own. While this list has some essential to keep you fresh and clean, don’t forget the basics – rain gear, plenty of shoe options, a sweatshirt or jacket for cool night time weather and socks…lots of them!
1) Solar showers are a cinch to use (just fill with water and toss it on top of your car to heat in the sun). They take up barely any room but feel so good when you are too hot to think or too dirty to sleep. Bring a shower mat (though a less expensive plastic one will also work) to keep feet out of dirt, but let the water through. Also don’t forget a jug to fill the shower…or to hold some spare water if you’re far away from a water source.
2) If you are planning on using the on-site showers trailers bring a backpack to tote your essentials. Since the shower is also your changing room something waterproof is a great idea (to keep a change of clothes/ towel dry). I also suggest a pair of cheap plastic flip flops for the showers – its often wet and muddy in the areas surrounding them.

Borrowing a classic line from Dazed & Confused seemed appropriate for the final Bonnaroo journal entry of the year. I’ve got to admit, it’s been a mind-blowing experience to see how Bonnaroo, as a festival, has grown but still manages to stay the ‘same age’, so to speak. I’ve been attending the festival since its inception and at the time I was still an undergrad. Now, two degrees and a full time job later, it’s allowed me to look at the festival in a different perspective. Not to mention the simple fact that I’ve grown older as well — I’ve seen my fellow Bonnaroo friends grow up, get married, buy houses, have kids and everything else that classifies us as “adults” now. Heck, I even saw my OWN students at Bonnaroo this year. Talk about a weird experience.
I love how there are things you can count on year after year at Bonnaroo besides the music – the tents, the bobble heads, the fountain, the Ferris wheel, the Silent Disco – to name a few. They also have tweaked and added things as the years have passed – the Barn, Planet Roo, additional stages, the installations throughout the campgrounds and the Comedy Tent. This year we saw the addition of a slip and slide, beach volleyball, Rock Band contests and a midway carnival. The promoters make the experience such that you always have something new to check out and can still rely on some of the same ol’ things. A little like Disney World – only for half-way grown up music fans. Anyways, enough about the reminiscing – let’s get to Sunday’s music!
