New Year’s Eve Report: the Disco Biscuits

After an amazing year on the road the Disco Biscuits returned to New York City’s Nokia Theater for the 2nd year for their New Year’s Holiday Run. Memories of the chaos and cold from last year couldn’t keep people away as the show was again sold out much in advance. With a light wet snow falling outside, the theater staff was much better prepared to greet the masses of fans going into the show, and the smooth entry process allowed everyone to get inside before the first notes of M.E.P.H.I.S rang out. The night started early. Though the curfew at the Nokia was extended for the NYE festivities, tDB went on without an opener and hit the stage promptly at 9:30 much to my surprise.

The past year has been a big one for the Disco Biscuits. From creating their own festival at Red Rocks, to their big sets at Rothbury and High Sierra Music Festival, to a new video on mtvU, the signing with Red Light Management, and the constant teasing of the long awaited album Planet Anthem. The quartet has been in high gear with no signs of stopping. While the entire holiday run is getting rave reviews (especially 12/30/09), this NYE show was one for the records.

Overall just a great collection of shows from start to finish that showed off how tight and together these guys have become.

“You should have heard him just around midnight”. A few covers, an acoustic section and a fan requested bustout of Strangefolk’s Far From Yourself round out this New Year’s show from Reid Genauer and Assembly of Dust. Reid hits the road again solo for a few shows to start 2010. Catching him solo is highly recommended, I’ve said it before, Reid is one of the best screamers of our generation.

CW: You Can’t Always Get What You Want

You Can’t Always Get What You Want is the closing track on the 1969 Rolling Stones album Let It Bleed. Regular readers may remember we did our first Stones song edition of Cover Wars two months ago when we took a look at covers of Can’t You Hear Me Knocking.

There are some very interesting quotes regarding the drumming on this track included in the book According to the Rolling Stones, you can see the page in question over at Google Books (what an amazing resource).

Aretha Franklin: This cover comes off a 1981 Aretha Franklin album that universally gets bad to lukewarm reviews. The arrangement is very 80’s. Still, it’s worth a couple minutes to hear the Queen Of Soul sing lead on this tune. Source: Love All The Hurt Away

When I started writing this weekly feature, I had the goal of showcasing new bands each week that had not previously appeared on Last Week’s Sauce. Well that’s officially over. There were just too many HT favorites out on the road last week for me to continue that trend…

Artist & Title: The Disco Biscuits – Uber Glue > Sabre Dance
Date & Venue: 2009-05-30 – Red Rocks, Morrison CO

The Disco Biscuits crossed a venue off their “to play” list this past weekend when they packed over 6000 fans into Red Rocks for an event they dubbed Bisco Inferno. This song combination features one of tDB’s newer instrumental compositions paired with an Aram Khachaturian’s composition from 1942 (an instrumental that had not been played by tDB in 5+ years). Sabre Dance has been used in many television shows, movies, etc…but the image it always conjures up in my mind is that of the 1985 flick Pee Wee’s Big Adventure. tDB play tonight in Providence.
